Big Picture

This lesson aims to introduce students to neurodiversity and its impact on artistic expression. Through exploring the stories of neurodivergent artists and engaging in sensory art creation activities, students will broaden their understanding of creativity and unconventional thinking. 45 min Duration. 

Objectives

  • Understand the concept of neurodiversity and its influence on artistic expression.
  • Explore various art creation methods engaging multiple senses.
  • Challenge conventional thinking in artistic endeavours. 

Stickability 

Students will remember that different thinking types can enhance creativity and that neurodivergent artists have significantly contributed to the arts.

Adaptability

  • SEN: Provide additional support during sensory activities.
  • Fast Progressors: Encourage them to explore more complex art creation techniques.
  • Extra Support: Offer guided prompts and assistance as needed.
  • EAL Learners: Use visuals and simple language to explain concepts

Assessment for Learning (if applicable)

Assessment will be conducted through questioning during discussions about neurodivergent artists, observations during sensory activities, and evaluating students' creative projects.

Learning Episodes

Introduction (10 mins): Define neurodiversity and its connection to art. Discuss different perspectives on creativity and introduce neurodivergent artists.

Sensory Exploration (15 mins): Engage students in sensory activities using various materials (e.g., textures, scents) to create art pieces that stimulate multiple senses.

Creative Expression & Presentation (20 mins): Guide students to create their artwork inspired by the sensory experience. Students present their creations and participate in a group discussion reflecting on the lesson. 

Closing: Encourage students to consider how they can embrace their unique ways of thinking in their daily lives and future creative endeavors.
