Interview with Paige Doran
Interview with Paige Doran
By Joshua Y'Barbo
Paige Doran is a textile artist and designer investigating the benefits and the problems of using AI to generate virtual textiles and physical products for the textile and craft industries. Doran prefers tactile weaving designs that can be touched over digital replications of AI-generated designs.
Joshua Y'Barbo (JY): Tell me about your practice: What do you make work about? How do you go about making your work? What do you think about when making your work? Do you still make work?
Paige Doran (PD): My practice primarily concentrates on colour and texture. I gain inspiration from photography; I love noticing natural colour combinations I see day-to-day and then translating this into technical hand-woven samples. My MA practice is an inquiry into the enhancement and/or hindrance of adding AI-generated and virtual textiles to the textile and craft industry. The beauty of the woven samples is in the contrasting colours combined with the changing textures and small, tactile design elements; they represent a sensorial experience that is difficult to replicate digitally.
JY: How was studying and finishing your degree? What had the most impact on the work you made and make now?
PD: Working and designing alongside my peers has been eye-opening this year; everyone comes from vastly different backgrounds with varying practices and specialisms. Seeing everyone approach their work differently has been inspiring and influential in how I will continue to think about art.
JY: Based on your experiences, do you have any problem-solving advice for other artists & designers?
PD: Try not to concentrate on creating what you think is "perfect"; some design mistakes will have a reason, and inconsistencies are always beautiful!
JY: What are your immediate and professional concerns or interests?
PD: I am at an in-between stage currently, as I am just finishing up my MA. The design world seems vast and ever-changing, so it can take time to find out where to start.
JY: Do you have any questions for me, other artists, or anyone further afield?
PD: How do you continue to find inspiration for your work to keep evolving and developing whilst still staying true to your design identity?
JY: By looking for problems that are significant to you, both inside and outside of your design practice. A unique idea combines partial or old ideas into something new. Therefore, looking for problems and solutions in your immediate work as a designer and with your life-long history of individual interests, hobbies, or broader concerns gives you two pillars of material to create something original and reflective of your identity.
